The Piano: A Timeless Tale Back on the Big Screen
James Brown
Arthouse Houston has introduced the “Wes & Rick’s Pix” series, curated by esteemed Texan filmmakers Wes Anderson and Richard Linklater, to celebrate the recent reopening of the River Oaks Theater. Both directors, who spent their formative years attending screenings at the River Oaks Theatre, have handpicked films that have significantly influenced their cinematic journeys.
The River Oaks, a cherished Houston landmark since 1939, has long been a beacon for film enthusiasts, offering diverse cinematic experiences. After a period of closure, this historic venue has reopened its doors, blending its rich legacy with modern amenities. The theater now showcases an eclectic mix of films, from independent and arthouse selections to classic and blockbuster movies, and has expanded its repertoire to include live performances.

The upcoming feature in this series is Jane Campion‘s 1993 masterpiece, “The Piano.” Set in 1851, the film tells the poignant story of Ada McGrath, a mute Scottish woman portrayed by Holly Hunter, who is sent to New Zealand for an arranged marriage. Accompanied by her young daughter, played by Anna Paquin, and her beloved piano, Ada’s life intertwines with George Baines, depicted by Harvey Keitel, leading to profound and transformative events.
"The Piano" received widespread critical acclaim upon its release, garnering the prestigious Palme d'Or at the Cannes Film Festival in 1993, with Campion becoming the first female director to receive this honor.
